Muay Thai Traditions

Thailand is an amazing country that is well known for its rich traditions and historical heritages. The Thai people have well preserved their traditions and some of the traditions are maintained till date. The country also practices a number of traditional Thai sports that dates back to several centuries. Among the traditional Thai sports Muay Thai or the Thai form of Boxing is the most notable the traditional sports of Thailand has not only gained popularity in the country but also has secured its place in the international area. Sports lovers from different parts of the world take interest in this traditional sport. Many of the sports loving tourists who visit Thailand make it a point to watch a game of Muay Thai. 

Muay thai or the Thai boxing is generally played in a boxing ring which is decorated with neon lights. Like other forms of boxing, two people participate in a game of Muay thai. The rules of this boxing are not similar to that of western boxing. This form of boxing goes beyond kicking and punching and includes kneeing and elbowing. Unlike western boxing hitting the opponent below the belt is also allowed in this game. 

In the beginning of a traditional game of Muay thai, Wai Khru is performed. It is a spiritual ceremony through which the participants of the game pay respect to their teachers, the boxing ring and the spirit. During Wai Khru loud cheering and traditional Thai instruments fill the ambiance of the Muay Thai stadium. The participants also perform Ram Muay before the beginning of the actual game. It is a dance ritual through which the participants show their skills. According to Thai belief these pre-match ceremonies can bring luck to the participants and assure a fair game. The game is one of the most popular games in Thailand and is loved by locals and tourists alike.
