Sepak Tarkaw - An Ancient Thai Sport


If you want to take active part in Thai sports activity in Bangkok you should opt for Sepak Tarkaw. It is a type of kick volleyball often played in Southeast Asian countries. The sport is very popular all over Thailand and is considered as a traditional Thai sport. You can have a great time playing this amazing game in different Bangkok parks. According to the game historians, the game was already popular among the people of Thailand in the 15th century.


Sepak Tarkaw or Tarkaw is a game which is more like volleyball or net football. In this game the players are allowed to use both their hands and feet. Touching the ball with head, knee and chest is also allowed in this game. Though some of the rules of the game are similar as volleyball, a different kind of ball is used in Sepak Tarkaw. The ball in this game is a rattan ball. The rules of the game vary from country to country. If you watch or play a game of Sepak Tarkaw, you will find this game highly interesting. The game has its similarity with net football and volleyball and also requires a little of gymnastic and Kung Fu for kicking the ball.

This traditional Thai sport is probably several centuries old. Though there is no correct historical date of origin of this game, the game historians have found ample evidence that the game was popular in Thailand in the 1400s. There is a picture in Wat Phra Kaew that depicts Hindu God Hanuman playing this game with a group of monkeys.

There are arrangements for playing Sepak Tarkaw in many of the parks in Bangkok. You can also participate in this game as a player and have a great time playing this game. But if you do not want to participate in this game and want to watch it as a spectator you will still find this Bangkok sport very exciting and interesting.
